Microsoft Software Systems Academy or MSSA is an 18-week (or two 9-week terms)intensive-training program that started in 2013 to provide veterans withfurther development of critical, technology-based skills for today’s growingindustry. To enroll, you must meet the following criteria: * Be active duty personnel transitioning out of the military within 6 months or be a recently honorably discharged veteranctive duty service members would go through the program as their duty assignment on base or on a local community campus) * Current security clearance strongly preferred * Interest in IT with no requirement of previous experience * Must demonstrate technical competency for chosen specialization. Volvo (and CALIBRE) Apprenticeship and Training Opportunities for Veterans
Just last month, Volvo launched a new technician program known as the VolvoCar USA Veteran Technician Careers Program. The program provides theopportunity to veterans for a smoother transition into the civilian workforce.In addition, it allows military-learned skills to be put to use.The comprehensive program will utilize resident training and e-Learning in aneffort to give veterans a chance to break into an automotive career. Thisprogram takes place in collaboration with CALIBRE Systems. Through thisinitiative, Volvo and CALIBRE aim to annually provide jobs for 120 U.S.military veterans. Eligible hopefuls are: * Honorably discharged military veterans or currently-serving members of the National Guard or Reserve * Have three or more years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair * Possess a clean driving record * Can pass a series of background checks and drug testing.Candidates who meet that criteria can apply to participate in a 4-weekinstructor-led and on-the-job training program. This represents a full-timejob opportunity at a local, participating Volvo Cars Retailer.Upon completion of the program, selectees can participate in a 12-month U.S.Department of Labor and GI Bill-approved registered apprenticeship. Thoseentered into the apprenticeship have the option to utilize GI Bill benefits toreceive a monthly housing allowance stipend for a full 12 months during theapprenticeship. The Apprenti model comes from Washington state, specifically the WashingtonTechnology Industry Association (WTIA), a 1,000-member-strong tradeassociation representing the state’s tech businesses.It’s not only a path to training for professionals, but a means to fill jobsfor companies that are hiring. The hope is that apprentices can becomeemployees once they are trained. As an employer-first model, Apprenti touts a20-25% cost savings over traditionally sourced talent, as well as access topublic and private funding, and tax credits to support implementation.Carlson, Apprenti’s CEO, said that WTIA members were having trouble fillingvacant roles, especially with diverse technologists, and that the collegepipeline simply wasn’t enough to fill demand.Apprenti CEO Jennifer Carlson (Courtesy photo)“We need something that can scale to that level or greater, given that that’snot producing enough talent,” Carlson said, comparing the apprenticeship modelwith universities.It’s a problem that is acutely felt in Pittsburgh, too, said Maria Fattore,director of entrepreneurship and investor relations at FortyX80. She said thatPGH Tech Council CEO Audrey Russo began listening sessions with memberbusinesses pre-COVID, and found that they had open positions for tech rolesthat they weren’t able to fill.“It got worse during the pandemic,” Fattore said. “…Some of the employerpartners that we were with had over 50 job openings for software developers.”Apprenti’s collaboration in Pittsburgh is unique among their 20+ markets inthat the collaboration is hybrid: they handle the programmatic side, while theTech Council, with its deep connections to the region’s business community,handles the business partnerships.The program is funded by a variety of sources. RK Mellon Foundationcontributed $100,000 for general operating support and implementation inPittsburgh, some of which will be used to cover things like childcare andtransportation costs for apprentices with financial needs. Much of the moneycomes from state grants. Partner4Work, chief workforce development partner inthe Pittsburgh region, is the fiscal sponsor for the program.
